BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY MESSAGE – SEPTEMBER 2022
Friday, September 2, 2022
One of the most critical elements in school safety is getting our community’s children to and from school safely. While the primary role of a school crossing guard is to guide children safely across the street, each guard plays another key function — a role model helping children develop the skills necessary to cross streets safely at all times. The position of crossing guard is one of the most dangerous of municipal jobs due to uncooperative motorists and accidents.
The Glen Rock Police Department assigns crossing guards at 22 key locations to assist school children. Parents wishing to sign their elementary school children out of school at lunch time assume the responsibility for assisting their child. As staffing and service requirements permit, Police Officers are assigned to periodic enforcement details in school zones. However, the number of school buildings alone outnumber the Police Officers on patrol any time of the day. It is impossible to have an officer at every school zone each day. We therefore rely on the cooperation of parents, students and school staff in providing a safe environment.
The responsibility of parents to provide for safety in our school zones requires the cooperation of each parent to:
- Leave home early and expect delays, traffic is going to move slowly. The priority in any school zone is the safety of children. If you are running late you are going to be late!
- Drive slowly and avoid distractions, especially your cell phone.
- Learn and follow the school’s drop off and traffic safety plan. Each school’s traffic safety plan relies on YOUR cooperation. Contact the school’s principal with any questions or concerns.
- If you need to spend time at your child’s school beyond a simple drop off or pick up, you must find a legal parking space. Be prepared to walk as parking close to the school may not be possible.
- Always stop when directed to do so by a school crossing guard or Police Officer.
- Do not block crosswalks, intersections, driveways, fire zones, or park illegally.
- Avoid making U-turns or backing up within the school zone markings.
- If you park on the side of the road, always have your child exit the car on the side away from traffic.
- Don’t park so that your child dashes across the street to get to the school.
- Always have your child use the designated crosswalk; this includes when you are walking with them. You set the best example for your child!
- Remind your child to follow the school crossing guard’s instructions.
- If you have a child who is recovering from an injury, has some form of restricted mobility or there is an emergency please contact the Glen Rock Police Department in advance for assistance. School Principals do not have the authority to grant special parking permission on Borough Streets, in Fire Zones or to permit parking in Handicapped Zones without a State issued permit. Once a parking summons has been issued, it cannot be taken back.
- NOTE TO HAMILTON SCHOOL PARENTS: Construction at the school will limit vehicle access. Contact the school for instructions. Plan ahead, expect delays and parking restrictions. https://glenrockpolice.com/

Celebrating the Library's Centennial Year
Tuesday, August 30, 2022
In celebration of the Glen Rock Public Library’s Centennial year, the Arts Council of Glen Rock in partnership with the Friends of the Library who manage and maintain The Gallery, have organized a juried art show. Viewing is available to the public during regular Library hours throughout September.
A committee comprised of Arts Council and Gallery Friends representatives selected the finalists. The exhibition features local artists’ interpretations of books published in 1922; from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Henry Ford, Emily Post, Beatrix Potter, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Herman Hesse, James Joyce, and many more of the giants of literature. Twenty-six entries have been updated and the collection includes paintings, photographs, sculpture, and poetry. Each artist has selected a book and the art reflects each book’s theme, story lines, characters, title, and the author. Each entry expresses the individual artist’s vision that will surprise and create a gallery experience that is not only engaging but promotes literature in a different context. Favorite storybook characters are represented in a variety of Velveteen Rabbits, giant sea snails aiding Dr. Doolittle, and Cecily Parsley. The Arts Council of Glen Rock, founded in 2019, is committed to advancing and empowering the arts in town. Its aim is to provide artistic experiences throughout the year for the community and to celebrate all forms of the arts. The Gallery, maintained by the Friends of the Library since 2006, has become a creditable exhibition space attracting artists within the local art community, northern New Jersey, and throughout the New York metropolitan area. It The establishment of The Gallery further defines the important place the Library holds in the community. For further information please visit www.friendsglenrocklibrary.org

The Gallery in the Glen Rock Public Library March Exhibit
Thursday, March 3, 2022
We welcome the art of Barry Shiff for the month of March to The Gallery in the Glen Rock Public Library. These colorful oil paintings and watercolors of historic New Jersey and New York historical landmarks evoke the nostalgic charm of a bygone era. Mr. Shiff’s classic paintings of old Railroad Stations, Towns, Boardwalks, and Amusement Parks capture life as it was at the early 20th century. The authenticity of his subjects are the result of frequent trips to historical societies, libraries, antique shops, vintage post cards, old magazines and books.
The Gallery was established through a partnership with the Friends of the Library in 2006. Maintained by the Friends, it is a designated space and carries with it an opportunity to enhance the Library itself, and at the same time to enhance patrons’ cultural experiences. It has become a creditable exhibition space attracting artists within the local art community, northern New Jersey, and throughout the New York metropolitan area. The establishment of The Gallery further defines the important place the Library holds to all citizens of the community. For further information visit www.friendsglenrocklibrary.org
